Athora Ireland plc is an Irish insurance company focused on providing reinsurance solutions to insurers and the efficient management of variable annuities for policyholders, predominantly in the UK and Germany.

Formerly Aegon Ireland plc, Athora acquired the business in April 2018 and a new chapter in its strategy began with the provision of reinsurance solutions. It was rebranded to Athora Ireland plc in July 2018. Today, Athora Ireland has €1.0 billion of assets under administration and 13,000 variable annuity customers.

In December 2018, Athora completed the sale of the Athora Ireland offshore bond portfolio to Utmost Ireland, representing about €3 billion of assets under administration for 7,000 UK-based customers.

In March 2021, Athora announced it had agreed to sell the Athora Ireland variable annuity portfolio to Monument Life Insurance, a wholly-owned, Dublin-based subsidiary of Monument Re. The sale is expected to close by year-end 2021, subject to necessary Irish High Court and regulatory approvals. Following the sale, Athora Ireland will focus on further developing Athora’s fast-growing reinsurance business.
