Our Story

The company was founded in 2002 as Scottish Equitable International (Dublin) plc. That year, we also launched our first offshore bond product in the UK market and continued to sell a variety of offshore bond products into the UK until they were closed to new business in 2017.

In 2006 the company launched the UK’s first ever variable annuity product called “5 for Life” and followed this with ten years of sales of variable annuity products into the UK, German and Dutch markets. The company was renamed to Aegon Scottish Equitable International plc in 2007 before being renamed Aegon Ireland plc in 2009. Following the purchase of the company by Athora Holding Ltd., it was rebranded Athora Ireland in July 2018.

In December 2018, we completed the sale of our offshore bond portfolio to Utmost Ireland dac. Today, Athora Ireland manages approximately £1 billion of funds for some 13,000 variable annuity customers, predominantly in the UK and Germany.

We are also Athora’s European reinsurance hub and, together with Athora Life Re, we provide innovative and creative capital optimisation and risk management solutions to European life insurers.

In December 2018, Athora Ireland plc was awarded inaugural financial strength ratings together with Athora Life Re Ltd. Click here for our latest ratings.

In March 2021, we announced the proposed sale and transfer of our variable annuity portfolio to Monument Life Insurance DAC. The proposed sale and transfer are subject to Irish High Court and regulatory approvals. Subject to receiving these approvals, the sale is expected to complete around year-end 2021.
